"Taking it All " Chapter 18
"Will you stop that?" Heero snapped as Duo watched the scene again. It was just a little too convenient that the reporters caught such footage. "I'm just awed. You hit him. . .not just hit, but hit-hit." Duo turned on the couch to face Heero. The Japanese man had just finished a shower and was leaning against the wall with a towel draped over his head. "I never thought I'd see the day you two would fight, let alone you knocking the hell out of him. In truth, I could see him and Quatre fighting before you two. I mean, you guys are like brothers without the sibling rivalry." "You think I'm proud of what I did?" Heero asked from under his towel, hoping his voice didn't reveal the fact that he was close to tears. "Well, no. . .but I guess it would really depend on the situation. I mean, if Trowa deserved it, then I guess-" "Duo." "Huh?" "Change the subject." Heero pleaded and pushed from the wall. He headed into the bedroom, while pulling the towel from his head. No matter how big of a jackass Trowa was acting, he didn't deserve that. . .no man should be on the other side of Heero's fist; especially when he wasn't in full control of his strength. He wondered how much force he placed into the blow. He knew Trowa could handle a great deal of physical pain, so for him to crumble like that. . .Tears spilled from Heero's eyes. Seeing the footage over and over again only proved that it wasn't some bad dream. Trowa really was going to marry Quatre; even after telling Heero differently. Duo stood at the doorway of Heero's bedroom. He didn't need to see tears to know he was crying. He could feel them. Violets dropped to carpet. He wasn't sure what he could do to help. Even though it wasn't the first time he witnessed the act, he hated to see Heero cry. He wanted to hug him, but remembered what happened the last time he tried. "Heero. . .it's going to be okay. I'm sure he'll forgive you once the swelling goes down. Don't beat yourself up over this. I mean, he didn't hold the Veyate-" "You're not helping." "Sorry. Guess I'm not really sure what to say right now. . .Is there anything I can do for you?" Truth was that there wasn't. Duo was just too good a friend to realize this. Trowa was the only one that could. . .and maybe, for the time being; something else. "Sake." Duo was taken aback. Heero had given up drinking four years ago when he got so drunk he nearly raped his girlfriend. "Are you sure about that?" The Japanese man nodded slowly. "Just pour half the bottle out before you give it to me. . .then leave me alone." "I don't think-" "You said you wanted to help. I need something right now to. . ." His voice trailed off, not wanting it to crack. He needed to drown his pain; even if it was just for the night. He didn't want to think of Trowa, or see the image of them together every time he closed his eyes. He didn't want to remember the golden promise or the pain he caused Trowa. Most of all, he didn't want to feel his own heart breaking as it had since he saw the engagement ring. He wanted peace again, just for tonight. He knew he'd never have it any other way.
"Kitten, it's getting late. You should head to bed." "I'm okay. I'm worried about you." "Believe me, I've been through worse." "I'm not talking about that." Trowa closed his good eye to avoid contact with Quatre. "I don't understand. You guys have always been such good friends. Why would he hit you like that?" "I honestly don't know; but whatever the reason, I'm sure it's justified." "How can you say that? Heero's always been questionable to me. There's something not right about the whole scene." "Kitten, Heero's just as sane as I am. . .but I'll admit, I've never seen him that distraught before." "What do you think caused it?" Trowa shrugged lightly and opened his eye to look up at Quatre. "Is it because we're getting married?" "Somehow, I feel that it's more than that. He was lashing out at you." "That's nothing surprising. He hates me." "He's never verbally lashed out before; not even to me. He usually speaks with glares and death stares." Quatre shifted on his lover's lap while studying his reactions. "Then there's the little fact that I obviously did something to hurt him." "I never thought Heero the type to get hurt." "He was trembling kitten. Whatever I did to him; it's eating away at him like nothing I could never phantom. He had tears in his eyes, and I know he was doing everything he could to keep them back. His tone. . .if I didn't know any better. . .I'd say his heart was breaking." "Did he tell you what you did to him?" "He was too vague. He must have felt that I should know without him having to say anything. I should probably call him." "He might not answer the phone." Trowa removed his ice pack and rested his head against Quatre's chest. "Maybe you should give him distance. You know, time to cool off before approaching him again." "He's my best friend. I can't leave him like this." "Trowa, he punched you. You were unconscious for five hours. He fractured your skull. How can you sit there and still say he's your best friend?" "Because he's Heero, and I believe in him. There's something ripping him apart. I refuse to leave him like that; especially if I caused him to act like this. . .I need to fix it." "What if it can't be fixed?" "Then I can at least try to be the good friend that he's always been to me." "Good friend? He's done nothing but take advantage of the fact that you're always there for him Trowa. He always have, ever since you met. It seems like everytime you go out of your way for him, you're the one that ends up suffering." "Kitten-" "Why can't you let Duo handle this?" "He won't tell Duo anything. Duo wouldn't understand Heero the way I do; the same way he understands me. Kitten, please tell me you're okay with this." Quatre lightly petted Trowa's hair. His aquamarine eyes were focused on the silver chain resting again the back of Trowa's neck. He wondered if it was wise to let them get close again. "I don't think it's the best ideal you ever had Trowa. I have a really bad feeling inside about this. . . .but if you feel the need to help him, then I guess I can't hold you back." "Thank you." "Just promise me you'll wait a couple of days before going near him. I don't fully trust him, and I don't want a repeat of today." Trowa hesitated. Quatre didn't fully see Heero's behavior, not that he would understand even if he did see it. He wasn't going to be able to wait. Fear of what Heero may do plagued his mind. He pulled from Quatre's touch; his closeness. "I can't wait kitten." "Why?" "He told me that he wasn't going to stick around. . .what if he hurts himself?" "Come on, it's Heero we're talking about." "Right, the same man I met on a suicide mission that he nearly completed. He is still only human, he can die like everyone else. He knows exactly how to do it; and that's what scares me. I can't lose him like that." ~ * ~ Chapter
